What is stem mastering?

Stem mastering is a process that lies in between mixing and mastering. Rather than manipulating all the individual tracks in a song, related tracks are grouped together and exported as stems. In a stem master, the mastering engineer will work with about 4-7 stems which might consist of a stem for the drums, bass, leads, fx, vocals, reverb, delay, etc. This process allows for greater flexibility compared to a normal master since certain track groups can be adjusted without affecting the other elements in the song.
