What is mastering?

Mastering is the final stage of the production process. A mastering engineer takes a high-level approach and looks at a song and/or project as a whole. This step provides the finishing touches.

During the mastering process, characteristics like overall tonal balance, stereo width, and levels are adjusted to optimize the recording for playback on various systems and formats. Recordings are also cleaned up to remove pops, clicks and other unwanted artifacts. If mastering a multi song project, the mastering engineering will also ensure that the project sounds cohesive by maintaining a level of consistency between the songs.
